How it Started

How it Started

Before the hardware. Before the studio. Before the workflow.

This track traces back to a time when I was making beats on BeatMaker 2 while riding the bus to school, building ideas on an iPhone because that’s what I had access to. Working within those limitations meant making compromises, and one of them was leaving the sample and bassline intact.

Years later, that decision became part of a running rumor among friends and eventually grew into the full blown lie that I sampled basslines. Looking back, I can laugh about it now.

Instead of distancing myself from the track, I decided to revisit it. Not to erase where it came from, but to finish the idea the way I originally heard it in my head. Better tools, more experience, and a clearer understanding of my craft allowed me to rebuild it from the ground up while keeping the spirit of the original intact.

The reconstruction followed the same blueprint as the original version. What began on an iPhone was rebuilt on the MPC Live 2, staying faithful to the arrangement and feel that first inspired it. This time, however, I had the ability to shape the details with greater precision. A newly crafted bassline doesn’t dominate the track as much as it adds texture and depth, filling in spaces that the original version could only suggest.

This is where the journey started. Not a revision of history, but a reminder of it. A snapshot of a young producer making beats on a bus ride home, and a reflection of how far that same idea could travel years later.
